Shell Oman organized a ceremony to celebrate the three student teams that represented Oman in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia 2016, which was held in Manila, Philippines. The ceremony was held under the auspices of H.E. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Oil and Gas.
The three Omani teams from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Caledonian College of Engineering and German University of Technology (GUTech) were among 117 student teams from various colleges and universities in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Australia who gathered in the Philippines in March of this year for a unique four-day event to showcase, test and drive their self-built fuel-efficient vehicles on the streets of Manila. Shell Eco-marathon challenges student from around the world to design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The engines are powered by various energy sources, fuels, hydrogen cells or lithium batteries. The winners are the teams that go the furthest using the least amount of energy.
The SQU team put on an outstanding performance, coming in a commendable fifth place in the Prototype Gasoline category - and setting a new Arab record of 281 kilometres per litre of gasoline using their prototype called 'SQU Eco-Wheels'. The team from GUTech, Team Megalodon, participated with a prototype diesel engine called 'Diesel Meister', and the Caledonian College team, named Sadarah, participated with a prototype electric engine called 'N2'.
Supporting the Omani teams to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon is a key part of Shell’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and nurturing Omani youth development while encouraging innovation in the area of sustainable mobility, fuel efficiency and energy conservation.

Commenting on the performance of the Omani teams at Shell Eco-marathon, H.E. Salim Al Aufi, said: “The Omani teams keep returning to this event with more determination to succeed and better results every time. They are making us proud year after year and I am happy to see that the SQU team is scoring advance positions with a new Arab record of 281 kilometers per litre.”
Speaking at the occasion, Chris Breeze, Shell’s Country Chairman in Oman, said, “The three teams should be really proud of their knowledge, creativity and dedication and particularly the way in which they supported each other. We are delighted to have lent our support to these high-calibre students who will go on to be tomorrow’s leaders and entrepreneurs, and are confident that Shell’s Eco-Marathon was a great learning experience for them.”
Shell Oman recognized the Omani students, and also awarded the students with the opportunity to go on a learning adventure with Outward Bound Oman for a 3-Days leadership course. Outward Bound Oman will help to make a significant contribution to the development of the young Omani students, helping to build their confidence and character, increase their employability and equip them with skills to meet the challenges they face both now and in the future.
The Shell Eco-marathon programme is one of the world’s most innovative and challenging student competitions held annually in Europe, America and Asia. The programme encourages students to develop innovative vehicles that exemplify fuel efficiency and the future of transportation.

ABOUT SHELL IN OMAN
Shell is active in Oman across the oil and gas industry and is involved in joint venture and independent activities ranging from research and development, exploration and production to trading and retail. Shell also implements extensive social investment programmes that contribute to the sustainable development of the country.
Shell Development Oman LLC provides a central point for co-ordination of all Shell activities and interests in the Sultanate of Oman.
A dedicated Shell Representative office was established in 2002, creating for the first time in Oman a Shell identity independent from the different joint venture companies in which Shell has been proud to participate over many years.
Led by the Shell County Chairman for Oman, the Representative Office undertook the dual role of representing Shell and acted as a long-standing corporate citizen of the Sultanate by providing a conduit for a broad range of social investment schemes, including the successful Intilaaqah programme.
The broad range of activities undertaken by the office from social investment through to learning and technology sharing continually grew and to enable Shell to further expand its efforts to support the development objectives of the Sultanate, the Representative Office was transitioned to a limited liability company on 1 March 2008. This change continues to show our long-term commitment to the sustainable development of Oman.
Shell Development Oman LLC continues the dual role of representing Shell and contributing to the sustainable development of Oman (as the previous Representative Office did).
