Oman Shell Host the Energy Security Scenarios Workshop in a bid to Tackle Future Energy and Climate Challenges

Muscat – Oman Shell hosted a workshop on the latest Energy Security Scenarios yesterday with key figures from the government, academia, and the energy industry in attendance.

The workshop provided a detailed analysis of alternative futures, valuable insights on the latest developments in climate change, and thought-provoking perspectives on energy security and sustainability as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by the world today.

The Energy Security Scenarios were presented by Shell’s Chief Climate Change Adviser, David Hone. The Energy Security Scenarios consist of two scenarios called Archipelagos and Sky 2050. They explore how different country archetypes react to tensions and trends and asks the question: ‘Can a world desperate for immediate security also meet the long-term challenge of climate change?’. Shell’s scenarios stem from the need for energy security, whilst exploring how the world could decarbonise to achieve desirable future outcomes such as net zero by 2050 and limiting global warming to below 1.5°C in line with the Paris Agreement.

Speaking about the Energy Security Scenarios, Malak Al Shaibani, General Manager of Corporate Relations and In-Country Value, Oman Shell, said, “It was a pleasure to welcome David Hone and host the Energy Security Scenarios in Oman. Exchanging ideas and insights on global energy and climate challenges, and understanding how to approach these issues through scenarios research and data was a great learning experience. Failing to plan is planning to fail, which is why scenario planning is so important. Decisions made today have a direct impact on the future. By developing possible future scenarios, we can evaluate current tensions and trends associated with energy and climate, and in turn enhance our decision-making process to affect positive change and shape a sustainable future for our planet.”
